Visits to the Animal Shelter

The program offered by the project “Learn Russian in the European Union” includes a large number of excursions and field trips. We also organize for our foreign students visits to the animal shelter “Second Home”. In our today’s article, we’re going to tell you how the visits are organized and what our students’ impressions about them are.

About the animal shelter

The organization “Otrā māja dzīvniekiem” (“Second Home for Animals”) was founded on May 20 in 2010 to help homeless, ill or injured domestic and wild animals, to protect them, to disseminate information about animals in need for help, as well to help them to find the contact with people.

About the animal shelter

Later, on April 12 in 2014, the animal shelter “Second Home” was opened. The shelter is located in Daugavpils region, in Demene Parish near the village of Janucems. Any person can donate some money for animals or work in the shelter as a volunteer.

Visists to the shelter

Visits to the animal shelter is an extra-curriculum activity, and students can choose whether to participate in it or not. However, almost all our students, especially ones who love animals join the event with enthusiasm.

As a rule, students bring gifts for animals to the shelter, and make donations. At the shelter, students play with animals or take them out for a walk. Most students who have visited the shelter at least once, would like to go there again. Therefore, we organize visits to the shelter regularly throughout the program.

Etude on Dvinsk by F.Fedorov

The Baltic region is one of the most catastrophe prone regions of the 2nd millennium, especially its second part; it is the centre of attraction of ‘geopolitical’ interests of the European world. Probably the most tragic fate has befallen to the eastern part of the present Latvia and its multi-titled town of Dinaburg – Dvinsk – Daugavpils. During its 730 years long history, the town went through five rather autonomous periods of development, five different lives (German, Polish, Russian, Latvian, Soviet), and at the beginning of the 1990s it entered into the 6th period.

The history of Dinaburg – Dvinsk – Daugavpils is the history of five attempts by the town to begin its life anew; and this is determined not only by the fact that the town was four times burned down and had to start life from scratch, but first and foremost because each of these periods was characterized by a total change of ethnos and the socio-cultural field.

The present article deals with the cultural space of the town in one of the most efficient periods of its development – from the 1860s till World War I.
